The Commission on Journalistic Ethics has been operating for over 20 years now, and over the past five years we have processed over 100 complaints against media publications annually. The Commission’s decisions help to avoid lawsuits and to improve the quality of journalistic materials.

However, there are few cases when the parties are ready to discuss together both the subject of the complaint and ways to resolve the situation. Complainants often use complaints as a tool to influence the media, and newsrooms perceive them as criticism of their activities.

Playing the watchdog role, journalists have a crucial mission — to provide society with truthful information, expose injustice, and monitor the activities of public authorities and other influential institutions. However, in order to effectively fulfill this role, journalists themselves must be open to criticism and constantly work to improve their content.

Openness to criticism and readiness for improvement, as well as active cooperation with self-regulatory bodies, help journalists perform their important role in society even better and more effectively.

We seek to hear from the editors and journalists themselves in order to understand what needs to be changed or improved in the work of the Commission as a self-regulatory body.

Questions to be discussed:

  • What role can editors and journalists play in the process of self-regulation?
  • How can we encourage the media to comply with ethical standards?
  • How can criticism be presented to be perceived constructively rather than an attack?
  • What are the specific cases where self-regulation has helped resolve conflicts or avoid lawsuits?
  • How can the self-regulation process be improved so that journalists would see its real value?
  • Is there a need to amend the Ethics Code of the Ukrainian Journalist?
  • What training programs or workshops can help journalists better understand and comply with ethics standards?

We invite you to join the conversation to find solutions and improve self-regulation in the media.
