The Commission on Journalistic Ethics has agreed on cooperation and signed a Memorandum with the journalism department of the Teaching and Research Institute of Psychology and Social Sciences of the Interregional Personnel Management Academy.
The purpose of the memorandum is to coordinate efforts that will contribute to the development of professional journalism in Ukraine, increase the quality of journalistic content, reduce fakes and manipulations and thus contribute to Ukraine’s development overall.
The parties agree that their Memorandum is based on the following understanding:
- The role of quality media is crucial at the important stage of the formation and development of democracy in Ukraine;
- Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental human rights and, at the same time, is inseparable from the responsibility for the dissemination of information;
- Ukrainian citizens need protection from the onslaught of disinformation, fakes, and manipulations which are knowingly or unknowingly shared in the media and on social media platforms;
- Lack of media literacy and critical thinking among the audience creates a crisis of trust in the media and promotes the spread of unreliable information;
- Strict regulation of the media by the state contradicts the principles of democracy, and self-regulation in this sector requires attention, thoroughness, awareness of the main principles of journalism, adherence to standards etc.;
- The quality of journalism directly depends on the quality of education in journalism schools, and the quality of teaching increases when it is based on real examples and experience of reputable practicing journalists and editorial offices;
- Methodological materials, manuals for teaching journalism need improvement and authors’ awareness of the importance of professional and ethical standards.
We remind you that earlier in 2023, the Commission signed memoranda with:
- Korolenko Poltava National Pedagogical University;
- Vladimir Dal Eastern Ukrainian National University
- Ivan Franko Lviv National University
