The Strategic Communications Department of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine addressed media professionals regarding the coverage of activities of the Armed Forces.
Commending the efforts of hundreds of Ukrainian and foreign journalists who strive to provide the global community with objective information about the war in Ukraine, often putting their own lives at risk, the StratCom of the Armed Forces urged them:
- to follow the requirements of the order of the Commander-in-Chief dated March 3, 2022, No. 72 “On the Organization of Interaction between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Other Units of the Defense Forces, and Representatives of the Media during the Legal Regime of Martial Law,”
- to adhere to ethical standards in the field of journalism (practical recommendations of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics provided after the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, published at https://cje.org.ua/library/posibnyk-z-zhurnalistskoi-etyky);
- to trust only official speakers and avoid disseminating unverified information from “private sources” regarding the coverage of events on the frontline;
- to verify information through official agencies before believing and sharing it;
- to refrain from personal assessments of military operations in the public information space because only the the highest military leadership and authorized persons have complete information from the battlefield and can make reliable analyzes and forecasts;
- when planning an interview, to discuss tentative questions with representatives of the press services in advance because the process of their approval will help the media better formulate their own opinions and cover the topic, and the representative of the unit competent in this area will provide truthful and comprehensive information.
