This is particularly important in the case of persons representing Russian newsrooms, Russian expert institutions or think tanks, or other structures, even if they claim to be in opposition to the current Russian regime.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission decided to point out this issue to Ukrainian journalists based on the negative case of the Russian Ksenia Hell, who claimed to be an employee of the International Criminal Court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When requested for additional details by The Kyiv Independent, the ICC responded that this person never worked with them and never had access to materials concerning Russia abducting Ukrainian children, which she actively commented on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, before her exposure, the comments of this pseudo-expert were actively shared not only by Russian liberal media, but also by Ukrainian ones, including news agencies, TV channels, and online media. Thus, the audience received false information regarding the case of abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia, which is currently tried by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission points out that Russia can use undercover individuals (including journalists, bloggers, experts, etc.) to spy, participate in psyops or with other manipulative purposes, including discrediting Ukraine or the Ukrainian military, distorting the idea of Russia\u2019s responsibility for war crimes etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the Commission <strong>urges journalists to check and study carefully all their sources of information and to be vigilant while selecting individuals for commentary <\/strong>and interviews.&nbsp; In particular, the Commission recommends the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Invite verified, competent experts to comment on events or the situation in Ukraine and the world. During the war, selection of experts is as important as verification of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. To find out whether an individual is real and competent on certain issues, double-check their links with institutions or organizations they claim to represent. If there is no public information about a certain person on the website of the institution, it is best to file an information request and find out whether the person is really who they claim to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Use monitoring of public statements and messages to verify a person. If a person spreads questionable statements, hate speech or any other harmful or manipulative content, refuse to interview them or ask them for commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. Avoid sharing quotes or statements of persons published by other media without independent verification and critical analysis of such quotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5.
